Biologic and Steroid medications: What to remember

Steroids (usually end with the suffix -one, such as Prednisone) and Biologic (usually end with the suffix -ab, such as Adalimumab aka Humira) medications can be life-saving and greatly improve quality of life for individuals suffering from a multitude of diseases, particularly very bad allergy-based conditions or autoimmune disorders.  However, in addition to having multiple side effects, they purposely suppress the immune system.  This is how you ‘feel’ better.  Your immune system becomes no longer able to respond to whatever is insulting your body.  Symptoms are a form of communication that your immune system uses to alert you.  So whatever insults (ex. physical or emotional toxins, virus, yeast or bacterial overgrowth, lack of good bacteria, mold, heavy metals, food sensitivities) caused your immune system to be overactive and start attacking itself or caused your body’s symptoms to be seemingly out of control, these medications are forcing your body to turn a blind eye to those things.  But medications do not cleanse your body of those insults, so they are not gone. Naturopathic doctors look for and address these insulting contributors that cause your immune system to uncomfortably react, and have helped many people experience not only significant reduction of symptoms but improved overall health.  This includes the many conditions that steroids and biologics aim to treat: rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoporosis, allergic asthma, urticaria. I have seen the biologic medication commercials for a while now, but what made me become alarmed is when they started advertising Dupixent (duplimab) for eczema.  I had significant eczema and atopic dermatitis as a child.  I do not see eczema as a life-threatening condition.  It is uncomfortable, but not something that places you in a hospital or greatly effects your physical ability to function.   Therefore, I do not agree with a strong medication like a biologic being used on a regular basis for eczema or atopic dermatitis unless it is extremely severe with no other natural solution that works.  Truth is though, natural medicine has worked great for my skin.  Through the education I have gained to become a Naturopathic doctor, I learned that immune-suppressing medications have the capability to drive disease deeper into the system.  If that happens, you may just present with another illness or symptom later on.   In fact, through working with a Naturopathic doctor, you may even see a return of old symptoms, thoughts or emotions as the body sheds different layers to heal itself.  A common symptom that can return when the body is healing is a rash that presents itself for a while and then goes away. Through working with a Naturopathic doctor like myself, you have the chance to reduce the dose of the medication and/or eventually not need it, both of which can reduce possible medication side effects. All this to say the following: I am not against the use of medications when needed.  But if you want to experience healing, even though you may be taking medications to keep your system calm, also work with an expert of natural medicine like myself to help cleanse and rebalance your body, regulate (not suppress) your immune system, and restore health.
